Movie I dig 016: 4 luni, 3 saptamâni si 2 zile (4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days) (2007)

The central theme in this movie is the sum of abortion and life in pre 1989 revolution Romania. The sum obviously is illegal abortion. Although the law making abortion illegal in Romania eventually became the cause for the fall of the regime (a huge young population rising up against the tyrant powers), this movie instead of taking on the big picture, zooms in on the personal consequences of this prohibition. And it does this in a slowly creeping painful storyline. It really takes you and doesn’t let you go until well after the movie.

Most of the scenes are shot in a single hotelroom and with the same three characters. All three do and say things they shouldn’t, but at the same time should. Really should. This movie portrays how life under tyrant rule can be a struggle to survive. Various parts of the movie are quite brutal, as is the storyline in general.

A very nice winner of the Palme d’Or that will definitely make you feel grateful for living in a free country.
